Why a Markilux semi-cassette awning is different

Markilux 1600 details

Partial canopy coverage

The top box covers the canvas from above when retracted: protection against direct rain and dirt accumulation, with a more compact profile than a full cassette. The ideal solution when installation space is limited.

Markilux 1600 semi-cassette
Compact and integrated design

The semi-cassette awning takes up less space on the façade than a full cassette. Its reduced profile makes it easier to integrate into balconies, windows and façades where installation dimensions are tight.

awning motorisation
Optional motorisation

Available in manual and motorised versions with wind and rain sensor. Motorisation allows control via remote control or mobile app, and integration with home automation systems.

Semi-cassette awnings: protection and compact design for terrace and balcony

The semi-cassette awning is the balance point between the full-cassette awning and the open-arm awning. Its upper box protects the fabric from above when retracted — preventing the accumulation of water, dirt and UV degradation — while maintaining a more compact and cost-effective profile than the full cassette. It is the preferred solution for terraces and balconies where installation space is limited but a higher level of protection than an open-arm awning is desired.

At Cortinsa we install Markilux semi-cassette awnings made to measure in Barcelona and Madrid. The Markilux semi-cassette range — models 1600 and 1710 — is the European technical reference in this category: German manufacturing, lacquered extruded aluminium structure, certified technical fabrics and optional motorisation with wind and rain sensor.

Full-cassette, semi-cassette or open-arm awning: which to choose

The choice between the three systems depends primarily on the available budget, installation space and the level of protection required. The full-cassette awning offers maximum fabric protection and the greatest durability: it is the most cost-effective long-term investment for intensive-use installations. The semi-cassette awning is the alternative when the installation space does not allow a full cassette, or when the budget is tighter without wishing to forgo a degree of fabric protection. The open-arm awning is the most economical option: suitable for sheltered spaces and seasonal use where the fabric is not exposed to adverse conditions.

For residential terraces with intensive year-round use, we always recommend a full-cassette or semi-cassette awning over an open-arm awning. The difference in fabric durability — between 5 and 8 additional years of service life — more than offsets the difference in initial investment.

Motorised semi-cassette awnings: automated convenience

The motorised semi-cassette awning incorporates a wind and rain sensor that retracts the awning automatically in adverse conditions. It is particularly recommended for high-rise balconies and wind-exposed terraces, where the awning may remain extended without the user being present. Markilux motorisation is compatible with home automation systems — Somfy, KNX, io-homecontrol — and allows control via mobile app or remote control.

Frequently asked questions about semi-cassette awnings

What is the difference between a semi-cassette awning and a full-cassette awning?

The box awning protects the canvas completely inside a closed aluminium cassette when retracted: maximum protection and durability. The semi-cassette awning covers the canvas with a top box open at the front: protection against direct rain and dirt with a more compact profile and a lower installation cost. For intensive use and prolonged exposure to the elements, the full cassette is always the best long-term option.

The semi-cassette awning is the right choice when the installation space on the façade does not allow for a full cassette, when the budget is tighter, or when the terrace is in a relatively sheltered location. If use is intensive throughout the year and the terrace is highly exposed to sun and rain, we always recommend the full cassette for its greater durability.

Yes. Markilux semi-cassette awnings are available in manual and motorised versions. The motorisation incorporates a wind and rain sensor that automatically retracts the awning in adverse conditions. It is especially recommended for elevated balconies and wind-exposed terraces. Compatible with Somfy, KNX and io-homecontrol home automation systems.

Cortinsa installs the Markilux 1600 and Markilux 1710 models from the semi-cassette range. The Markilux 1600 is the classic model with a 236×216mm cassette and inclination from 5° to 50°. The Markilux 1710 is the evolved version with a refined design and greater available surface area. Both are made entirely to measure according to the exact dimensions of your space.

The aluminium structure of a correctly installed Markilux semi-cassette awning has a service life of between 12 and 20 years. The fabric, being partially protected by the top box, lasts between 8 and 12 years depending on use and orientation. Markilux guarantees the supply of spare parts and Cortinsa offers post-installation technical service in Barcelona and Madrid.

Yes. We have BIM files in Revit (.rfa) and IFC formats, CAD construction details and technical data sheets with certified solar factor for the Markilux models we install. All documentation is available free of charge in our BIM Library for registered architects, engineers and interior designers.
