Why Glatz parasols are different

sunshade details

Swiss-engineered aluminium, not retail-grade plastic

Glatz parasols are manufactured from engineering-grade aluminium with Qualicoat Seaside Class 2 anti-corrosion lacquering — the standard for marine and high-humidity environments. A structure designed for intensive professional use, not a seasonal garden. All hardware in stainless steel.

Glatz Ambiente Nova sunshade
Up to 10.9 m² per parasol · structures from 2 up to 5×5 m

From the compact 2-metre format to the giant parasols of the 5×5 m Palazzo, the Glatz range covers every outdoor shade need: residential terraces, private gardens, hotel pools, restaurant terraces, and large-format contract spaces.

Glatz Palazzo parasol
Certified wind resistance: up to 115 km/h

The high-performance models in the Glatz range — Palazzo Style, Fortino, Fortero — are certified to withstand up to 115 km/h when fixed-anchored. A wind resistance that no conventional large-surface garden parasol can match, specified in each model's technical datasheet.

Patio parasols and sun umbrellas: the complete guide to choosing the right model

Patio sun umbrella or professional parasol: what is the real difference?

The market uses the terms patio umbrella, patio parasol and garden sun umbrella interchangeably, but the technical differences between a consumer solution and a professional solution are substantial. A retail patio sun umbrella is designed for light seasonal use: four months a year, moderate wind conditions and a lifespan of two or three seasons. A professional parasol such as those in the Glatz range is built for daily use over eight or ten months a year, in environments with regular wind, with customers opening and moving the parasol several times a day. The difference lies in the extruded aluminium columns, in the opening mechanisms with precision bearings, in the 100% polyacrylic or polyester fabrics with UV protection exceeding 98%, and in the certified anchoring systems. Cortinsa works exclusively with Glatz parasols, the Swiss benchmark brand for large patio sun umbrellas for professional use and technical installation. Whether you are looking for a large garden umbrella for private use, or a giant umbrella for hospitality that will last an entire season on a bar terrace, the Glatz range has the right model.

Offset, side-post and centre-post parasols: when to use each type

The first decision when choosing a patio parasol is the support system. The offset parasol — also called a cantilever or side-arm parasol — has the mast outside the shaded area, allowing tables and chairs to be placed directly underneath without any central obstruction. This is the preferred format for bar terrace umbrellas and hospitality sun umbrellas where maximum use of space is essential. The side-post parasol with an off-centre mast — such as the Glatz Pendalex or the Sombrano — is ideal for terraces attached to façades or spaces where central anchoring is not possible. The centre-post parasol is the most stable and cost-effective solution for private gardens and residential terraces where the presence of a base pole is not an issue. Within the Glatz range, the Fortero and the Fortino are the reference models for intensive hospitality use; the Palazzo is the solution for giant umbrellas of up to 5×5 m in high-end contract installations.

Hospitality umbrellas: what to specify when the parasol is a working tool

Hospitality sun umbrellas have different technical requirements from residential ones. On a restaurant or bar terrace, the parasol is opened and closed several times a day, is exposed to wind for hours at a time, and must withstand seasons of up to ten months. The parameters that matter in professional use are certified wind resistance — Glatz models in the professional series reach 115 km/h with fixed anchoring —, ease of opening and closing with the patented synchronous opening mechanism, and long-term availability of spare parts. The most in-demand giant hospitality umbrellas for bars, restaurants and hotels are the 3×3 m, 4×4 m and 5×5 m formats, typically in anodised or powder-coated aluminium in neutral colours. Cortinsa is an official Glatz distributor in Barcelona and Madrid, with its own spare-parts stock and in-house technical service. For hospitality and HORECA projects, we manage the installation of multiple units with the same colour and fabric reference to maintain the visual coherence of the terrace.

Large garden umbrellas: solutions for luxury residential and private spaces

For private gardens, swimming pools and high-end residential terraces, the selection criteria are different: aesthetics, the variety of fabrics and colours, and integration with the overall outdoor design take precedence over load capacity or industrial ease of opening. In this segment, the Glatz range extends from the Glatz Teakwood Parasol — crafted in natural teak wood for designer gardens — to the large-format rectangular and square parasols of the Palazzo series, available in more than 200 fabric references. The most requested large garden umbrella in luxury residential projects is the 4×4 m or 5×5 m format in powder-coated aluminium in custom colours with bespoke fabric. For projects that combine parasols with other external shading systems — such as tensioned canopies or pergola awnings — Cortinsa coordinates the complete proposal from design through to installation. Parasol installation in Barcelona and Madrid

In Barcelona, we install Glatz parasols on restaurant terraces in the Eixample, Barceloneta and the upper city, in private gardens in Sarrià, Sant Cugat and Sitges, and in hotels and facilities along the Costa Maresme and Costa Daurada. We manage projects both for private clients looking for a large garden parasol for their detached home and for hospitality groups needing to equip several terraces with the same model.

In Madrid, we work on hospitality terraces in the city centre and expanding areas, in gardens of detached homes in La Moraleja, Pozuelo and Las Rozas, and on exterior design projects along the Henares corridor. Cortinsa has its own technical team in both cities, with a 24-hour response for site visits and quotes. Request a technical visit with no obligation.

Frequently asked questions about parasols and sunshades

What is the difference between a professional parasol and a retail garden parasol?

A professional parasol such as those in the Glatz range is built for intensive daily use: extruded aluminium, precision-bearing opening mechanisms, fabrics with UV protection exceeding 98%, and certified anchoring systems. A retail garden parasol is designed for light seasonal use, with a lifespan of two or three seasons. The difference is most apparent in wind performance: Glatz professional parasols achieve certified wind resistances of up to 115 km/h when fixed-anchored.

For intensive hospitality use, the most recommended models are the Glatz Fortero and the Glatz Fortino in 3×3 m or 4×4 m formats — both featuring a patented synchronous opening mechanism, a continuous mast down to floor level, and wind resistance of up to 115 km/h. For larger terraces requiring several coordinated units, the Palazzo in 5×5 m format is the benchmark for high-end hospitality. Cortinsa advises on the most suitable model and anchoring system for each type of surface and exposure.

The standard fabrics in the Glatz range are 100% polyacrylic or polyester with a water-repellent treatment, making them resistant to light rain. For full waterproofing against heavy rain, models with quality 5 fabric (polyacrylic ~300 g/m²) offer greater protection. In no case are Glatz parasols designed to remain open in a storm or in wind exceeding the certified rating for each model.

With basic maintenance — periodic fabric cleaning, mechanism lubrication and covered storage during months of lower use — a Glatz parasol under intensive professional use has an estimated service life of 8 to 12 years for the aluminium structure. The fabrics are independently replaceable, so there is no need to replace the entire unit when the fabric reaches the end of its service life.

Yes. The Glatz range offers more than 200 fabric references in a variety of materials and colours, and the aluminium structure is available in natural anodised, anthracite anodised, and custom RAL colours at a surcharge. For hospitality projects requiring chromatic consistency with the venue’s visual identity, Cortinsa manages orders for multiple units in the same fabric and structure combination.
It depends on the model and the surface. Large parasols — from 3×3 m upwards — require a fixed ground anchor to achieve their certified wind resistance. Glatz offers ground sockets, mounting plates and brackets for the various installation types: concrete, ceramic paving, timber or grass. Ballast bases in concrete, granite or steel are the alternative when drilling into the surface is not possible. Cortinsa carries out a prior technical site visit to recommend the most suitable anchoring system in each case.
