BUYING GUIDE

What type of pergola do you need? A guide to choosing the right system

Bioclimatic pergola or pergola awning?

The bioclimatic pergola has a fixed aluminium structure with a motorised adjustable-louvre roof: fully waterproof with the louvres closed, usable all year round. The pergola awning has a retractable textile roof that retracts completely when not needed. If your priority is using the terrace in the rain, choose a bioclimatic pergola. If you want an open sky in fine weather, choose a pergola awning.

A wall-mounted pergola uses the façade as the rear anchor point: fewer columns, better integration into residential terraces and urban spaces. A freestanding pergola does not require a supporting wall: it is the option for open gardens, pool areas, and hospitality projects where no façade is available.

Motorisation is recommended for any pergola exceeding 3 metres of projection or exposed to wind. Motorised systems with wind and rain sensors protect the installation automatically without requiring your presence. For small pergolas in sheltered environments, manual operation is a valid option at a lower cost.

In residential properties the priority criteria are aesthetic integration, ease of use and light control. In hospitality, restaurants and corporate projects the criteria are dimensions, certified wind resistance, guaranteed impermeability and modular installation to cover large surface areas. For professional use we always recommend a bioclimatic pergola with EN 13561 certification.

In most municipalities in Catalonia and the Community of Madrid, an aluminium pergola attached to a façade on a private terrace does not require major planning permission, but may require prior notification or a minor works licence. The criteria vary depending on the municipality and whether the pergola includes lateral enclosure. Our team advises on the specific requirements before the project begins.

What is the most suitable system for your project?

Gibus bioclimatic

Bioclimatic pergola, for those who want to use it all year round

The aluminium bioclimatic pergola is the most advanced solution for terraces used throughout the year, regardless of the weather. Adjustable louvres regulate light and ventilation in summer; with the louvres closed, the structure is completely waterproof in autumn and winter. It is the preferred system in hospitality and restaurant projects, penthouses, and high-end homes where the outdoor space is a genuine extension of the interior. We stock 7 Gibus models with European technical certification.

Markilux pergola awning, for those who want open sky when it's not raining

The Markilux pergola awning combines a fixed aluminium structure with a high-quality retractable textile roof. When the weather permits, the awning retracts completely, leaving the terrace open to the sky. The Markilux Pergola range — in the Classic, Cubic, Style, Compact and Stretch models — is the European technical benchmark: canvases with certified UV protection, motorisation with rain sensor and integrated LED lighting. The ideal solution for a wall-mounted pergola on a large-format terrace or balcony.

Bespoke aluminium pergolas: sun protection for terraces and gardens

An outdoor pergola transforms any terrace, garden or patio into a liveable space all year round. Beyond their decorative function, a bespoke aluminium pergola is a technical sun-protection solution that regulates temperature, reduces UV radiation exposure and extends the effective use of outdoor spaces in both residential settings and large-scale professional projects.

At Cortinsa we have been installing bioclimatic pergolas, pergola awnings and adjustable louvre systems for more than four decades. We are official installers of Markilux, the leading German manufacturer of sun-protection systems, and we distribute Gibus and Pratic systems for projects requiring specific technical solutions.

Types of aluminium pergola: what is the difference

The aluminium pergola market is structured into three categories according to roof type and performance level. The bioclimatic pergola incorporates motorised adjustable aluminium louvres that regulate light input and ventilation. With the louvres closed, the structure is completely waterproof. It is the most advanced solution for a terrace pergola in high-end residential use and for HORECA projects where the terrace must function in any weather conditions.

The pergola awning combines a fixed aluminium structure with a retractable textile roof. The Markilux Pergola range — in the Classic, Cubic, Style, Compact and Stretch models — is the European technical benchmark: certified UV-protection fabrics, motorisation with rain sensor and integrated LED lighting. Ideal for a wall-mounted pergola on large-format terraces and balconies where the option of an open sky is to be retained.

The Pratic aluminium pergolas stand out for their constructive versatility: available in wall-mounted or freestanding versions, they cover areas ranging from small terraces to large-format surfaces without intermediate supports. Their high-resistance lacquered aluminium finishes and compatibility with lateral enclosures, screens and glass panels make them a complete solution for residential and hospitality projects requiring maximum adaptability.

Retractable pergola and extendable pergola: full opening whenever you want

The retractable pergola — also known as an extendable pergola — combines openness and protection: when the weather allows, the roof retracts leaving the space completely open; when conditions change, it deploys in seconds. Motorised systems with wind and rain sensors act automatically, protecting the installation without requiring the user to be present.

For a penthouse terrace pergola, where exposure to wind is greater than on lower terraces, we recommend systems with certified class 3 wind resistance in accordance with EN 13561 and a double-wall extruded aluminium structure. The Markilux Pergola Stretch range is specifically designed for these conditions, with a counter-tensioning system that keeps the fabric perfectly taut at high wind speeds.

Pergola for gardens, swimming pools and large-format outdoor spaces

The uses of a garden pergola go beyond simple shade: creating a sheltered outdoor dining area, visually defining the space of a poolside pergola, covering a leisure area or designing an outdoor living room that functions as an additional room. For environments with high ambient humidity, lacquered aluminium guarantees corrosion-free performance and low long-term maintenance.

For large-scale pergolas — hospitality projects, corporate buildings or residential developments — modular systems allow surfaces of up to 100 m² to be covered without visible intermediate supports, maintaining the visual openness of the space. Motorised pergolas with centralised control allow multiple modules to be managed from a single point, integrating with the building’s home-automation systems.

Modern pergolas have evolved into permanent architectural elements that add value to a property. Unlike temporary solutions, a professionally installed aluminium pergola complies with European technical regulations, comes with product documentation for planning and municipal applications, and carries a manufacturer’s warranty on the structure and mechanisms.

Frequently asked questions about pergolas

What is the difference between a bioclimatic pergola and a pergola awning?

A bioclimatic pergola has a roof of adjustable aluminium louvres fixed to the structure: when closed, the pergola is completely waterproof with no additional elements. The pergola awning has a retractable textile roof that retracts when not needed, leaving the terrace open to the sky. Both are permanent aluminium installations, but the bioclimatic pergola requires a higher initial investment and offers greater technical performance; the pergola awning is more economical and allows you to enjoy the open sky.

In most municipalities in Catalonia and the Community of Madrid, an aluminium pergola attached to a façade on a private terrace does not require a major building permit. It may require prior notification to the local council or a minor building permit depending on the municipality, if the property is in an urban protection zone or if the pergola includes lateral enclosure. Our team advises on the specific requirements for each location before the project begins.

Technical pergola awnings use fabrics with a waterproof treatment that repels moderate rain. In heavy or prolonged rain, the optimum system is the bioclimatic pergola with closed louvres, which offers complete waterproofing equivalent to a roof. For hospitality projects where the terrace must remain operational in any weather, we always recommend the bioclimatic solution.

The systems we install are certified to European standard EN 13561. Markilux pergola awnings achieve wind resistance class 3 (tested up to 130 km/h). Gibus bioclimatic pergolas with extruded aluminium louvres withstand winds of up to 120–140 km/h depending on model and dimensions. The integrated wind sensor acts automatically to protect the installation before design limits are reached.

A bespoke aluminium pergola is installed in one or two working days depending on dimensions and motorisation. In most cases no masonry work is required if ballast-box columns are used, which eliminates the concrete foundation and considerably reduces both installation time and waste generation.

A wall-mounted pergola uses the building facade as a rear anchor point, reducing the number of columns required and improving architectural integration. It is the most common option for a terrace pergola in residential properties and restaurants with a terrace adjoining the premises. A freestanding pergola is the alternative when no facade is available or when the project requires positioning the structure in the centre of the space.

Yes. We have BIM files in Revit (.rfa) and IFC formats, CAD construction details and technical data sheets with solar factor for all the systems we install. All documentation is available free of charge in our BIM Library for registered architects, engineers and interior designers.
