BUYING GUIDE

What roof for your terrace do you need? A guide to choosing the right system

Pratic Tecnic or Pratic One? How to choose based on your space

If your terrace roof is installed in a space of up to 550 cm deep on the L side or up to 800 cm on the P side, the Pratic Tecnic is sufficient and offers the most discreet guide profile (5×10 cm). If you need to cover more than 800 cm in depth or your space exceeds that measurement in any orientation, the Pratic One —with 10×16 cm guides and up to 900 cm depth on both sides— is the only option. Both reach up to 1300 cm in width.

For exterior terrace roofing facing south or west with direct, intense sun exposure, opaque or smoked PVC fabric offers total protection against heat and rain. If your terrace has a glazed façade or you want to maintain brightness, fibreglass filter fabrics —with protection of up to 95% of UV rays— are the right choice. Transparent terrace roofing in crystal PVC allows natural light through whilst maintaining protection against rain.

The manual version is sufficient for patio covers for residential use with occasional opening and easy access to the mechanism. Motorisation is worthwhile for terraces wider than 6 m —where manual operation can be awkward—, in hospitality installations where staff need to operate the cover frequently, and in any case where the integration of rain and wind sensors for full automation is desired. The motor adds the possibility of app control and voice command.

Pratic sliding terrace covers require two walls or solid structures as fixing points. If your space does not have walls on the long sides, the alternative solutions are aluminium pergolas with canvas —which have their own self-supporting structure— or bioclimatic pergolas with independent columns. Cortinsa assesses the feasibility of each solution during a free technical visit.
Pratic aluminium terrace covers are designed for installation in sheltered spaces between walls, which inherently reduces wind exposure. For installations on exposed terraces, motorisation with a wind sensor that automatically retracts the canopy in strong gusts is the recommended solution. For terraces regularly exposed to winds exceeding 60 km/h, bioclimatic pergolas with aluminium louvres offer greater structural resistance.

Pratic Tecnic

Choose the Pratic Tecnic if a discreet profile is your priority. With 5×10 cm guides —the slimmest in the range— it integrates with minimal visual impact into designer terraces, galleries and confined spaces. Maximum depth of 800 cm on the P side and 550 cm on the L side.

Pratic One

Choose the Pratic One if you need to cover a surface of great depth. With 10×16 cm guides it reaches up to 900 cm in depth on both the P side and the L side. The solution for large terraces, interior courtyards and large-scale hospitality projects.

Roofs for outdoor terraces: aluminium and PVC covers without uprights for large-format spaces

Covers for terraces and patios: what they are and how they differ from pergolas

Covers for outdoor terraces are sliding PVC roof systems on aluminium guides that are installed between walls or in existing openings without the need for an independent load-bearing structure. Unlike bioclimatic pergolas — which have their own columns and beams — or aluminium pergolas with canvas, covers for patios and terraces make use of existing walls as fixing points, eliminating the need for major building work and additional permits in the majority of installations. The result is a completely open retractable terrace roof, with no intermediate pillars to interfere with the usable space or circulation.

Cortinsa offers two models of Pratic exterior cover: the Pratic Tecnic with a guide profile of 5×10 cm and coverage of up to 1300×800 cm, and the Pratic One with a 10×16 cm profile and coverage of up to 1300×900 cm. Both share the patented anti-drip system, Qualicoat Seaside Class 2 powder coating and Made in Italy manufacture. The sliding PVC canvas packs into a minimal space when not in use, allowing the space to be enjoyed open on clear days and deployed in seconds against rain or intense heat.

Aluminium terrace roofs: technical features that make the difference

The defining feature of Pratic aluminium terrace covers is the absence of uprights in the covered span. The tension of the sliding PVC canvas is transferred entirely to the lateral guides fixed to the walls, with no intermediate supports to limit the space. Available fabrics include fibreglass filter options with protection of up to 95% of UV rays — ideal for terraces with glazed facades where solar control is sought without losing natural light — and opaque, smoked or transparent PVC fabrics for full protection against rain. The integrated lateral water drainage manages rainfall without the need for additional guttering. The motorisation available on both models is compatible with rain, wind and light sensors that automate the opening and closing of the cover, and with LED Line lighting integrated into the rails for night-time use of the space without any additional electrical installation.

Covers for porches and terraces in hospitality, residential and corporate spaces

Covers for outdoor terraces have three main usage profiles. In hospitality and catering, they are installed on restaurant and hotel terraces where automatic motorisation and resistance to the elements are priority criteria. Restaurant terrace roofs with a rain sensor allow the terrace to remain operational in unexpected weather conditions without manual intervention. In luxury residential settings, they are frequently used in villas and penthouses with patios or terraces bounded by walls, where a cover without pillars and minimal visual impact on the existing architecture is sought. In offices and corporate spaces, Pratic covers are specified for internal courtyards and office-floor terraces with integrated building automation. The ease of installation — without major building work in most cases — makes removable terrace covers the preferred solution also in residents’ communities and spaces where reversibility of installation is a requirement.

Installation of terrace roofs in Barcelona and Madrid

As official Pratic installers in Barcelona and Madrid, Cortinsa provides guidance on selecting the most suitable model — Tecnic or One — according to the depth of the space, the condition of the fixing walls and the level of motorisation required. The free technical visit includes on-site measurement and assessment of installation feasibility. For projects requiring technical specification, the Cortinsa BIM Library makes Revit (.rfa) and IFC files for Pratic models available to architects and engineers. Pratic modern terrace covers are frequently combined with Markilux lateral or vertical awnings to create fully protected outdoor spaces throughout the year in Barcelona and Madrid.

Terrace roof installation in Barcelona and Madrid

In Barcelona we install covers for outdoor terraces in restaurants in the Born and Barceloneta, penthouses in the Eixample and Sarrià, villas on the Costa Garraf and Sitges, and interior courtyards of buildings in Sant Cugat and Castelldefels. The construction typology of Barcelona — with terraces frequently bounded by party walls — makes covers between walls the most common solution for gaining square metres of covered outdoor space without additional building work or permits.

In Madrid we install terrace roofs in restaurants in Almagro and Chamberí, penthouses in the Salamanca district, and detached houses in Pozuelo de Alarcón, Las Rozas and La Moraleja. Madrid’s climate — with summers of high solar radiation and mild autumns — maximises the return on a motorised cover with rain sensor for continuous terrace use nine months of the year.

Frequently asked questions about covers for outdoor terraces

What is the difference between a terrace cover and a pergola?

The main difference is the fixing method. A terrace cover is installed between existing walls or partitions without its own structure, using them as support points — with no major building work or additional pillars required. A pergola has its own columns and beams and can be installed in any space even where no walls are available. The cover is more discreet and quicker to install; the pergola is more versatile in terms of location.

In the majority of private terrace installations, retractable sliding covers do not require planning permission as they are demountable elements that do not affect the structure of the building. However, regulations vary depending on the municipality and the by-laws of each residents’ association. Cortinsa advises on the applicable requirements for each project before installation begins.

Yes, with PVC fabric. The Pratic Tecnic and Pratic One models are available with opaque, smoked or transparent PVC fabric, which provides full protection against rain. Pratic’s patented anti-drip system prevents infiltration at the join points between the canvas and the guides. Acrylic and filtering fabrics are not 100% waterproof and are designed for shading, not heavy rain. Source: Pratic Tecnic One Folder technical data sheet.

The Pratic One model covers up to 1300 cm in width and 900 cm in depth with three bays. The Pratic Tecnic reaches up to 1300 cm in width and 800 cm in depth on the P side. The minimum width for both models is 250 cm. Source: Pratic Tecnic One Folder technical data sheet and official website pratic.it.

Yes. Both Pratic models are available with motorised movement, compatible with home automation via app and voice command, and with rain, wind and light sensors for full automation. The manual version is also available for installations without a power supply. Source: Pratic Tecnic One Folder technical datasheet.
As no foundation work or independent load-bearing structure is required, the installation of a Pratic sliding roof in a standard space between two walls is typically completed in one or two days. The exact timeframe depends on the dimensions, the level of motorisation, and the condition of the fixing walls. Cortinsa carries out a prior technical visit to confirm timescales and installation feasibility.
