Why a Cortinsa open-cassette awning is different

Markilux 1300 awnings without cassette

High-precision extendable arm

The Markilux extendable arm system offers smooth, precise extension at any projection position. A counter-tension tensioning mechanism keeps the fabric perfectly taut regardless of the chosen projection.

awnings without cassette
Minimum profile on façade

Without a protective box, the cofferless awning takes up the minimum possible space on the façade. The ideal solution for small balconies, windows and terraces where installation space is very limited.

awning motorisation
Optional motorisation

Available in manual and motorised versions with wind and rain sensor. Motorisation allows control via remote control or mobile app, and integration with home automation systems.

artisan awnings
Bespoke manufacture — technical and artisanal

Available in a technical Markilux version with lacquered extruded aluminium structure and RAL colours, and in a Cortinsa artisan version for singular projects requiring unique traditional design solutions.

Available awning models without cassette

All models include a full technical data sheet, motorisation options and made-to-measure manufacturing to the exact dimensions of your space.

Open-roll awnings: the most versatile solution for terraces and balconies

The open-roll awning is the simplest and most economical sun-protection system in the Markilux range. Unlike box and semi-box awnings, the fabric is exposed when retracted — rolled around the upper spindle — which reduces manufacturing and installation costs whilst retaining full shading and sun-protection performance when extended. It is the preferred solution for small balconies, windows, and terraces in sheltered locations where the fabric is not directly exposed to the elements when retracted.

At Cortinsa we install Markilux open-roll awnings and bespoke handcrafted awnings in Barcelona and Madrid. The Markilux open-roll range — models 930 and 1300 — offers the same German manufacturing quality as the rest of the range: powder-coated extruded aluminium structure, certified technical fabrics, and optional motorisation with wind and rain sensors.

Open-roll, semi-box, or box awning: which option suits you

The choice between the three systems depends on the intended use, exposure to the elements, and available budget. The open-roll awning is the most economical option: ideal for sheltered spaces, seasonal use, and balconies where installation space is very limited. The semi-box awning adds partial fabric protection with an upper casing: recommended when the terrace is somewhat more exposed to rain and dust. The box awning is the most cost-effective long-term investment: full fabric protection, greater durability, and lower maintenance over decades.

For terraces in intensive year-round use with direct exposure to the elements, we always recommend a box or semi-box awning. For balconies with an overhead canopy or terraces under a porch where the retracted fabric is not exposed to rain, the open-roll awning is a perfectly valid and more economical solution.

Handcrafted awning: the solution for singular projects

The Cortinsa handcrafted awning is a straight-pitch awning made by hand for projects that require unique solutions. It is the customary choice for the restoration of historic buildings, traditionally styled homes, and interior design projects where standard technical awnings do not fit aesthetically. Crafted with wooden arms and bespoke traditional fabrics, each handcrafted awning is a one-off piece tailored to the specific conditions of the space.

Motorised open-roll awnings: convenience without compromise

The motorised open-roll awning incorporates a wind and rain sensor that retracts the awning automatically in adverse conditions. It is particularly useful on high-rise balconies where the user is not always present to retract the awning manually. Markilux motorisation is compatible with home automation systems — Somfy, KNX, io-homecontrol — and allows control via mobile app or remote control. For architecture and engineering projects we provide full technical documentation: data sheets with certified solar factor and BIM files in Revit and IFC format.

Installation of open-arm awnings in Barcelona and Madrid

In Barcelona we install Markilux open-arm awnings and artisan awnings throughout the metropolitan area: Eixample, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Gràcia, Sant Cugat, Castelldefels and the Costa Garraf. This is the most common solution for balconies in residential buildings in the Eixample and other neighbourhoods where façade installation space is very limited and a cost-effective, functional solution is required.

In Madrid our technical team installs open-arm awnings in the capital and the main residential areas: Salamanca, Chamberí, La Moraleja, Pozuelo de Alarcón and Las Rozas. Open-arm awning projects for urban residential balconies and artisan awnings for the refurbishment of listed buildings.

Cortinsa has been an official Markilux installer in Spain for more than four decades. Our own technical team, no subcontractors, with a response time of under 24 hours. Request a no-obligation technical visit.

Frequently asked questions about open-cassette awnings

What is the difference between an open-cassette awning and a full-cassette awning?

The open-cassette awning leaves the fabric exposed when retracted — rolled around the upper axis — which reduces manufacturing and installation costs. The full-cassette awning protects the fabric completely inside a sealed aluminium box: greater durability and lower long-term maintenance. For sheltered spaces and seasonal use, the open-cassette awning is a perfectly valid solution. For intensive year-round use, we recommend the full or semi-cassette.

An open-roll awning is the right choice when the balcony or terrace has an overhead cover that protects the rolled-up fabric from rain, when the installation space on the façade is very limited, or when the budget is tight. It is also the usual solution for windows and small balconies where a full cassette would be disproportionate.

Yes. Markilux cofferless awnings are available in manual and motorised versions. The motorisation incorporates a wind and rain sensor that automatically retracts the awning in adverse conditions. It is especially recommended for elevated balconies where the user is not always present. Compatible with Somfy, KNX and io-homecontrol home automation systems.

The Cortinsa artisan awning is a straight-drop awning handcrafted with wooden arms and traditional fabrics. It is the solution for singular projects where standard technical awnings do not fit aesthetically: restoration of historic buildings, traditional-style homes, and interior design projects that require a unique, bespoke solution.

Cortinsa installs the Markilux 930 — with inclination from 5° to 80°, the most versatile in the range — and Markilux 1300 — with inclination up to 55° and a 350cm super-shadow for greater projection and vertical shade. Both are manufactured entirely to measure according to the exact dimensions of your space.

Yes. We have BIM files in Revit (.rfa) and IFC formats, CAD construction details and technical data sheets with certified solar factor for the Markilux models we install. All documentation is available free of charge in our BIM Library for registered architects, engineers and interior designers.
