Designer solar protection for urban balconies

Balconies in urban buildings present a genuine technical challenge: shielding yourself from the sun without sacrificing the view and without seeking permission from the residents’ association. Markilux’s answer to this challenge is the Markilux 900 clamp awning, the world’s first complete cassette system that combines telescopic bar installation with articulated arm and bionic tendon technology. The result is an awning that, at just 5° of inclination, provides complete shade whilst the view remains entirely unobstructed. At Cortinsa, as an official Markilux installer in Barcelona, we carry out on-site measurement, certified installation, and fine adjustment of the inclination according to each balcony’s orientation.
Unlike conventional clamp awnings — which require straight-arm brackets and a minimum inclination of 45° to provide shade — the Markilux 900 clamp awning tensions the fabric via articulated arms, eliminating the lateral elements that obstruct the outward view. The filigree cassette, measuring just 105 × 225 mm, integrates discreetly into any urban façade. The full range of Markilux cassette awnings available can be found on our category page, where you will also find the models with the greatest projection for larger terraces.
For those seeking an awning for a balcony without structural work, the Markilux 900 is the most efficient solution on the market. The telescopic bar system is fixed between the floor and ceiling of the balcony with a few screws, with no need to alter the façade or obtain planning permissions. This makes it the preferred option for rental properties and residents’ associations with restrictions. In the motorised version, the awning integrates with home automation systems that allow opening and closing to be programmed via sun and wind sensors. For balcony awnings in Barcelona, we work to installation lead times of 3 to 5 working days following the measurement visit.
The Markilux 900 is made to measure with widths of up to 400 cm and a projection of up to 200 cm, with more than 200 fabric designs from the Collection One range. Should the space require it, we also install Markilux vertical awnings for lateral protection or bioclimatic pergolas for larger terrace areas. For projects in residential buildings, offices, or hospitality premises, our technical team can produce a solar protection technical specification proposal containing all the information required to include the system in the execution project.

Frequently asked questions about the Markilux 900

How does the Markilux 900 differ from a conventional clamp awning?

Conventional clamp awnings use straight-point arms that require a 45° pitch to provide shade, blocking the view. The Markilux 900 is the first snap-fit awning with an articulated arm and bionic tendon: with as little as 5° of pitch, it achieves full shade while keeping the view completely unobstructed.

The standard system uses two telescopic bars that are fixed between the floor and the ceiling of the balcony with just a few screws at each end. The impact on the structure is minimal. There is also the option of supports for direct ceiling fixing without columns.

Yes. The telescopic bar system does not require planning permission or community authorisation in the majority of cases. As it is demountable, the awning can be moved with the tenant in the event of a house move.

Width up to 400 cm and projection up to 200 cm, made to measure. The retracted cassette measures just 105 × 225 mm.

More than 200 designs from the Markilux Collection One (visutex, suncolours and perla FR). Hardware in traffic white RAL 9016, metallic stone grey 5215 and metallic anthracite 5204, with special RAL available on request.

Class 2, equivalent to Beaufort force 5 (28–37 km/h). It is recommended to retract it in strong winds or during prolonged absences.

Yes. In its motorised version it is compatible with Smart Home: scheduling, sun and wind sensors, and integration with home automation platforms.
